I previously owned and managed an upholstery service business specializing in making slipcovers for sofas, couches plus cushion covers for cane/ wicker chairs and suites. We also made cushion seats for caravans and boats.
I learned to sew at Tafe in Australia later in life as an adult. This gave me the confidence to enjoy home sewing projects and eventually sew professionally in my own business. I like to revamp outdoor areas with new cushions or recover my lounges or make curtains for a new look.
So I have lots of tips, tricks, and how to sew that i will be sharing on the website.
Sewing an art or skill can be very rewarding. It is important to remember to let of the minor frustrations and mistakes. Patience is a virtue and when your sewing, being peaceful and harmonious is an asset. You can feel really empowered and satisfied with your own creations, putting your signature style on what you make. It can be so rewarding. I think it is important that we still make our own things just for the joy.
“When i was growing up allot of people would sew just to save money, today you can buy clothes for less than the cost of making them so people don’t often realize you can still save money with sewing.”
Saving with Sewing Your Own
You can often save making fancy or good quality curtains, roman blinds (if it is a large space) taking up , or altering hems, making lounge & outdoor cushions, replacing your own zips, making quality designer outfits or up cycling from previous garments or vintage fabrics.
Buying online for : – zippers , buttons , cottons and other things you need for projects is also a fantastic way to save. You avoid lining up for ½ hour, getting lost trying to find zippers in the store, and driving for 20 min there and back plus looking for parking. It is cheaper online and if you can use a computer or mobile phone it is faster going through checkout than waiting at the cash register.
